The Process of Producing Technical Documents:
There are many different ways to define the process of manual building. Two examples are included in the reading assignment: the “Manual Building System” and the “Document Develop-ment Process.” The “Manual Building System” outlines the elements that go into developing documents and building manuals. See the System Overview and the graphic pages 1, 2, 3. These visual aids
were developed to present an overview of a comprehensive project to a client so everyone involved could understand the process and help set it on a successful track. Descriptive models are particularly relevant today. As we move to single-source documents, models like these can be used to meet the needs of multiple audiences. Once we identify the
characteristics of each manual type, we can modify the information from the master document to fit the type.
The outline of the “Document Development Process” includes a convenient checklist of what
needs to be done at each stage. Technical writers and editors need to be involved in the planning stages as well as the actual implementation of the project. Whether you are part of a team or the sole resource for writing and editing, you need to be aware of all the steps involved in completing a successful project.
